Panton Light

April 15, 2013

The entry to the “Panton Re-Loved” competition by Hollin+Radoske Architects – “Panton Light” – was developed together with imagine structure and imagine computation.

First the classic Panton chair’s structural behavior was analyzed under typical operational loading conditions with FE calculation software. The result revealed, as expected, large differences in local stress distribution.

Now openings were inserted iteratively in less stressed regions within a previously defined hexagonal pattern where the size of the opening was reversed proportional to the local comparison stress value.

The local attenuation of the structure however has no influence on the global structural behavior and results in a more homogeneous stress distribution within the chair.

The chair is displayed in furnishing house Frick in Frankfurt until April 30th 2013.
